2012 – The Outback Opens!

We celebrated the opening of the Outback Community Kitchen and Garden on 14th July 2012 ). A project that cost £320,000 funded by HOT reserves that had been generated from surplus in previous years.

The Outback is a permaculture garden complete with a straw-bale community kitchen. The opening was timed to coincide with the Halifax Festival, where Park ward residents fully enjoyed the entertainment in the open space and the garden produce – exactly what it was designed for.

In 2012 Halifax Opportunities Trust also reached its 10th year in operation, which was celebrated with the opening of the Outback. History is repeating with our Community Celebration, which will be hosted at the Outback on 15th June 2023, marking our 21st and acknowledging that the Outback is now over a decade old! (link to more info).

2012 was another successful year for regeneration at the Trust, with our Enterprise sites become home to 75 businesses, which in-turn created around 325 jobs. Additionally, 650 businesses were supported through Creative Calderdale and other business programmes.

Creative Calderdale was a joint initiative that was funded by Calderdale MBC and managed by the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre. It provided a creative industry network for Calderdale, supporting everything that’s new, innovative and inspiring about the creative and digital industry in Calderdale. We do this through our website and our events.
