Family Outreach Worker (With additional responsibilities in Perinatal Mental Health)

Job Description

An exciting new opportunity has arisen to support families identified at risk of perinatal mental health issues.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Some experience of working with children, young people and their families
  • GCSE or equivalent qualification in Maths and English
  • An ability to build and maintain relationships with multi-agency colleagues
  • A non-judgemental, patient and sensitive approach to families under stress
  • A willingness to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service, which will involve weekend / evening work
  • The ability to work from other Family Hubs within Upper Valley and Central Calderdale area
  • A full driving license and the use of a car for work

About the Role

The role will include working with children and parents as a part of our community outreach which will include both home visits and facilitating groups.

Perinatal-Mental Health support is delivered as a part of our joint working with health partners and involves working with mothers from about 32 weeks of pregnancy until the end of a baby’s first year.

This post comes with opportunities to complete training in specific areas such as Baby Massage. It will involve close working with health professionals.

Job Overview:

To work with as part of Family Support and Outreach Team in supporting and developing children and families with complex issues, including assessing their needs. The role has a vital focus on Perinatal Mental Health to look at planning and achieving positive outcomes for children and families.

Responsibility and Duties:
  • To visit individual parents and families at home to inform them of services and groups that the Family Hub can provide, to identify need and offer low level support where required.
  • To undertake joint visits with health professionals where there is a risk of perinatal mental health issues
  • To plan and implement group work for parents and children both in conjunction with the Early Years Team and to run other pertinent groups such as baby massage and Friends groups
  • To contribute and support community events for children and their families
  • To contribute, support and encourage the participation of ‘hard to reach’ families
  • To work as part of the Upper and Central Calderdale Family Hub’s area team supporting and developing new and improved services, as well as promoting new and existing services to parents and children in the locality
  • Adhere to risk assessments
  • To support and offer guidance to children and families enabling them to access services and learning opportunities that match their needs
  • To attend and contribute to team meetings and discussions as appropriate to promote the principles of Family Hub’s, including developing a partnership approach with children and their families, ensuring social inclusivity and equality of opportunity
  • Communicate with service users and their families to keep them up to date with current issues
  • To establish strong relationships and work closely with health professionals
  • Attend meetings, briefings and training sessions relevant to Children Services and share this information with team members
  • To ensure data collection monitoring and evaluations are completed and recorded
  • To maintain relevant written records

Experience and Knowledge:
Essential:
  • Some experience of working in a paid or voluntary capacity with families and children.
  • Experience of working in partnership with other agencies such as Health and Education.
Desirable:
  • Experience of working with ‘hard to reach’ groups such as ethnic minority groups, asylum seekers, lone parents and teenage parents.
  • Experience of working with parents with perinatal mental health issues
Education and Qualifications:
Essential:
  • GCSE or equivalent grade C or above in Maths and English.
Desirable:
  • First Aid certificate.
  • Youth and Community qualification.
  • Childcare or other relevant qualification or training
  • Baby massage qualification
Abilities and Skills
Essential:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good organisational and planning skills.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, email and internet).
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to offer support and information in a respectful and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to organise own time and workload.
  • An understanding of the principles of community work.
  • Ability to motivate parents.
  • Ability to appropriately direct people to other services as required.
  • Ability to undertake work in different environments, i.e. family homes, groups, etc.
Desirable:
  • An understanding of the issues related to disadvantaged sections of the community.
  • An understanding of perinatal mental health
  • Knowledge of the Every Child Matters framework and the Children’s Centre Agenda.
  • Ability to speak a second language that reflects the local community.
