Meet Samhira, one of our Community Cancer Champions.
After losing her mum to breast cancer, Samhira chose to honour her memory by supporting and informing women in her community.
“Macmillan Cancer Support helped me all those years ago when I lost my mum. I feel that I have come full circle now I have trained as a Cancer Champion. I feel part of Macmillan and I am proud to be helping my community.”
Samhira organises regular walks with local women, using relaxed, “light touch” conversations to raise awareness about signs, symptoms and the importance of screening

The impact of her work:
• Women feel more comfortable talking openly about cancer
• Some have booked screening appointments after speaking with her
• Awareness of early detection is growing within her community
Her story reminds us that cancer awareness doesn’t only happen in formal settings — sometimes it starts with a simple conversation on a walk.
If you’ve been putting off booking a screening, let today be the day.
And if you’d like to make a difference in your community, consider becoming a Cancer Champion.
Together, we can save lives through conversation.
